FUT hair transplantation or replacement is a part of the hair microtransplant.
The theoretical principle is quite simple. Micro grafts consist of hairs that are transferred from the back of the scalp to the front where hairs are genetically different.
The procedure lasts a few hours, under local anesthesia and it is « almost » painless. No bandages are required, and you can resume your social life within days after surgery.
This advanced technique has several benefits for the patient.
2.The removal of the strip
The donor strip is removed from the top of the neck and consists of a strip of hairs, which will be meticulously cut.
The scar is approximately 1mm wide and invisible because it is covered by hair.
In the case of multiple hair transplants, the new strip is extracted near the old scar, in order to limit damage to the skin and to leave only one scar.

All the incisions are made according to topography and are properly angled to give the implant a very discreet and natural aspect. The width of the incisions is adapted to the size of the grafts.
Generally, there are three different types of incision:
- the small incisions, or the more anterior, receive one-hair grafts ;
- the medium-sized incisions receive two-hair grafts ;
- the larger incisions receive the three or four-hair grafts.
All the incisions are made personally by Dr Devroye.
Hair will start to grow within days following surgery.
Generally speaking, some grafts will fall out from the tenth day after surgery.
Hair that falls out does so with the bulb attached, which disturbs patients a great deal. There is no need for panic as the original cell, which will provide the new hair, always remains in the scalp and will ensure growth within two or three months.
8.Why choose Follicular Unit Transplant?
1. Higher density
The goal of a hair transplant is to introduce the maximum amount of hairs in the tiniest possible volume.
The careful cutting using a microscope allows us to remove all the skin and fat in the follicle and also to remove the conjunctive tissue found between the follicles.
This enables us to implant a higher number of hairs in a delimited area.
Depending on graft thickness, which is determined by the number of hairs that a graft contains, we will be able to transplant 35 to 45 grafts for every cm² which means 45 to 80 hairs for every cm².
2. A natural look
The grafts are classified, during cutting, according to the number of hairs that they contain.
There are 3 types.
- The "singles" group, which contain one hair. These grafts are placed in the first rows of the front hair line.
- The "doubles" group, placed just behind the "singles"
- The " three, four or more hairs" group. These grafts are exclusively placed inside the recipient area. This judicious use of grafts is the only technique which results in a totally natural aspect.
3. Each follicle is respected and thus growth levels are very high
Several comparisons were made regarding growth level depending on the different cutting techniques applied.
Nowadays, the use of microscopes allows us to avoid any type of waste.
The percentage of growing hair varies from 95% to 98% when prepared under microscopes.
Cutting hair using magnifying lenses or without any visual aids at all rarely yields a good result. The best way to illustrate this is with the cutting of grafts containing white hair.
Actually, the root of these hairs is transparent and it is totally impossible to see them without using a microscope! Without the aid of a microscope the degree of trans-section will inevitably rise, resulting in a waste of hair.
The number of transferable grafts is somewhere between 6,000 and 10,000.
Any loss is dramatic, because it is disappointing for the patient. Moreover the hair loss undermines the success of future grafts, as it exhausts the donor zone unnecessarily.
4. Treatment of hairy areas
Incisions are tiny and precise. It is thus also possible to treat areas which are not completely bald.
You can have a hair transplant at any time. These days you no longer need to be fully bald to have one.
5.Absence of any scars at the root of transplanted hair
When blunt instruments are used, which damage tissue or when punches are used to make the incisions, you will notice tiny ugly scars at the root of each graft.
When incisions are made with sharp instruments, the scar goes undetected.
